Book Two: Katarina's Dark Journey: follows the birth of Ukraine and the revolutionary war. Katarina and Anna flee from the Bolsheviks and the rebels. Peter's story touches on the rebuilding of Munich while facing a personal identity crisis.
Book Three (2024/5) Katarina's Dark Secret: Peter follows the trail of Katarina's lost son, Jacob, and the secret behind the fractured family.
Russian Mennonite Chronicles: This is a fictional story. The characters in these books do not portray any person in real life.
The characters of Katarina and Anna were inspired by memories and photos of the author's family.
The story of Peter in post-war Germany was influenced by the author's father whose mother died shortly after his birth. His character and personality were inspired by the men in the author's life who struggle to make peace with their childhood.
All characters are fictional composites.
Children of War: The character of Vira was inspired by news broadcasts during the onset of the war in Ukraine.

1915 Southern Ukraine: Fifteen-year-old Katarina takes little notice of the Great War and the regional conflicts in southern Ukraine — until she's injured in a rebel attack. Traumatized by the event, she seeks security at her her wealthy sister's estate. But in this German-speaking Mennonite world, the apron strings of freedom are held tightly by tradition. Katarina's unorthodox plans for her life are disrupted by Russia's civil war and Ukraine's demands for independence. The future is anyone’s guess.

During the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, the German army occupy Ukraine. When the Bavarian Cavalry are stationed at the Penner estate, resentment between the German-speaking Mennonites and their Ukrainian neighbors grows. Attracted to the dashing Captain Werner, Katarina follows her heart instead of her head. Kidnapped by the Black Sea Rebels, Katarina becomes a pawn in a dangerous game where she must rely on her wits and her faith to survive.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER OF VIRA: Children of War: The character of Vira was inspired by news broadcasts during the onset of the war in Ukraine.
In 2022, fourteen authors from around the world joined to create this incredible short-story anthology to raise funds to help the children of Ukraine recover from the trauma of war.
Genres include: historical fiction, literary fiction, fantasy, and memoir.
Each story portrays a child finding strength as they learn to cope with the violence around them.
Through Vira's Eyes written by MJ Krause-Chivers was selected as the feature story for the book.
All sale proceeds of this book are donated to Voices of Children Ukraine — an organization devoted to helping children of Ukraine heal from PTSD.
MJ Krause-Chivers is the sole Canadian writer included in this anthology, and her story Through Vira's Eyes is the featured first story.
Through Vira's Eyes: a five-year-old girl copes with her war trauma by trusting her guardian angels while she and her young friend flee a bunker in Ukraine for the safety of the displacement camp across the river.
